Ramblings about paint on wood structures around rabbits:
Any of the water based paint at the hardware store should be non toxic. We experimented with using cheap materials like oriented strand board (OSB) sheathing panels. OSB uses chips from wood processing and is pressed into boards that are less expensive than plywood. But when it gets wet it collapses like a soggy paper towel. So I started putting paint on everything.
I noticed that the unpainted structures were ugly after one year and looked like bio-hazards after two years. The painted structures were still good looking after three years. We would buy "mistake" paint at a discount from the hardware store. You don't get choice of color but it's half the price. You could use it as primer and put your preferred color afterward.
Have a good day!
